WHY I HIKE - Julie Brubaker

COC Hike Brubaker TRI was 25 years old and working for a law firm in Washington D.C. when I suddenly lost hearing in my left ear.  At first I was treated for a sinus infection, but when my hearing didn’t improve after a couple of months, more tests were ordered. Following a spinal tap and an MRI, I was surprised to be diagnosed with MS.

In the summer of 2000, I packed up and moved to Colorado to be closer to my family.  Initially I got involved with the Chapter through Bike MS.  My sister, cousins and I helped to start the Raw Hinies team and for seven years many training rides included toddlers or infants in carriers being pulled behind a bike or two!

When the Chapter started its Hike MS event, I was immediately interested as it offered a way for everyone to get involved – from my 10-year-old niece to my 75-year-old dad.  So we formed a family team, CUREageous Stampede, and started hiking.

Hike MS has been a great way for the entire family to do something together to support the cause.  Our 20-member team starts out together and everyone hikes to his or her ability. Thanks to generous family and friends, we raise nearly $20,000 each year!

Now Hike MS has evolved into an annual family reunion of sorts.  My parents, brothers and their family fly in and join Colorado family members to for the event. Following the hike, the weekend is filled with camping (for some!) and fun family time in our beautiful Rocky Mountains.

I feel really blessed to be doing so well and to have a family who has supported me and my MS.  They are my rock and at Hike MS we experience a special time and a share a bond that will lead to ending MS forever.
