WHY I HIKE - Daniel Lifshen

COC Hike Lifshen TRMy MS diagnosis came as a complete surprise. I was 23 years old when I first experienced numbness and tingling
sensations in my feet. When the feelings persisted I went to my primary care physician and then a neurologist. After an MRI and a spinal tap, I learned I had MS.

I knew nothing about this disease, but immediately poured myself into research to learn as much as possible. I also looked for resources, which is how I connected with the MS Society. The Colorado-Wyoming Chapter helped link me up with programs to help with treatment coverage.

For the past two years I’ve been able to take one of the oral medications available and it is working well. I’m very grateful that I no longer have to deal with injections. The Chapter also connected me with counseling to help me adjust so I not only live with MS, but thrive.

In 2008 I latched on to Walk MS to get involved and really do something that makes an impact. I formed a team and participated in seven Walk MS events and became a top fundraising team every year!  I was honored to be named Team Captain of the year in 2010.

This year I decided to do something different and try Bike MS, but an accident derailed my plans, so I chose another one of the options available and am participating in my first Hike MS.

It’s really powerful and important for me to be part of a community, whether it’s at Walk MS, Bike MS or Hike MS.  It reminds me that I’m not the only person with this disease and it helps to be with others who understand the challenges. The camaraderie and support is really genuine.

I look forward to Hike MS, where I can be outdoors, have fun and continue to raise money and connect with others.  For me, it’s a special way to fight back in order to have the best chance at a healthier future.
